Developing Your Psychic Senses - The Clairs

Developing Your Psychic Senses - The Clairs

Have you ever had a feeling, a knowing, a sensation that seemed to come from nowhere? A whisper of insight, a flicker of light in the corner of your eye, or the sudden scent of a loved one who has passed? These experiences may be connected to what many call the clairs — our intuitive senses that go beyond the physical.

These psychic senses are not rare gifts for a chosen few — they are natural abilities that we all have the potential to develop. Like muscles, the more we pay attention to them, use them, and trust them, the stronger they become.

In this blog , I’ve gathered together a deep dive into the clairs, ways to strengthen them, and games and activities you can try to explore your gifts with joy and curiosity.

Which ‘Clairs’ You Have Experienced and Which Might be your Strongest.

  • Have you ever seen a ghost or something else you can’t easily explain - lights? Do you see a lot of ‘signs’ angel numbers, feathers? Or have you dreamed about loved ones who have passed into spirit? These signs might indicate a strong sense of clairvoyance.
  • Do you emotional ailments manifest clearly as physical ones? - Do you always get physically sick as soon as you get stressed? When people talk about having a 'gut feeling' do you resonate particularly strongly. This is a sign suggesting you have strong clairessence.
  • Have things ever inexplicably moved from where you left them? Or when you dream do you ever dream the sense of touch? This might indicate you have a strong sense of clairtangency or clairtaction.
  • What senses are strongest when you practice meditation, visualisation or inner journeys? What senses are strongest when you dream? This might give you a clue as to your strongest ‘clair’.
  • Have you ever felt a strong sense of dislike about someone for no discernible reason other than ‘intuition’ - were you ever proved right? - This might be a sign of clairsentience.
  • Have you ever been humming a song and then walked into a room where it’s playing or turned on the tv or radio and it’s on. If so clairaudience might be heightened in you.
  • Are people easily enthralled by you talking? Are you or have you been a good salesperson? - You might have natural claireloquence.
  • Have you ever tasted something for no discernible reason? Or has any one or any situation literally given you a bad taste in your mouth? - This might indicate strong clairgustance.
  • Have you ever caught the scent of a loved one who has passed into spirit? Are you drawn to smell things when you pick them up or to tell who they belong to? - Maybe you have a natural aptitude for clairaliance
  • Do you feel a need to have background noise in order to think clearly or to get to sleep? This can be a sign of clairaudience - you may have got used to ‘shutting out’ the universal whispers.
  • Ever thought of someone a celebrity for example and then seen the news that they have just died? This can be a sign of claircognizance
  • Do you feel overwhelmed in crowds? Have to limit your intake of news? - this can be a sign of clairempathy.

The Clairs – A Guide to the Psychic Senses

Clairvoyance – Seeing with your inner eye, intuitive vision, or seeing things which are not in the physical plane, such as seeing spirits.

Clairsentience – Intuitive feeling; this can be from noticing the subtle vibrational changes when someone enters a room to feeling someone's physical pain.

Clairaudience – Hearing music, voices or other sounds which are not physical but spiritual in essence.

Claircognizance – Inner knowing, having information about people, places or things intuitively.

Clairalience – When someone detects smells which are not physically present but are instead from the spirit realm.

Clairgustance – When someone tastes something that is not physically present but is coming from spirit.

Clairtangency – More commonly called psychometry — picking up intuitive thoughts and feelings from touching objects or people.

Clairtaction – This can mean remotely touching someone and getting an intuitive knowing from that, or feeling the touch of a spiritual being such as the ‘touch of an angel’ and receiving insights from that touch.

Clairempathy – Feeling emotions intuitively, picking up on and knowing people and their energies and emotions.

Clairessence – Also known as intuitive embodiment — connecting with your own highest spiritual wisdom through your body.

Claireolquence – The ability to speak or otherwise communicate with your words to create spiritual effects — perhaps to support others to get into a very deep state of relaxation, to raise people’s vibration, or to help them shift into a higher state of consciousness.

Tips to Improve and Work on the Clairs

These gifts can absolutely be strengthened with intention and regular practice. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Practice! Maybe begin with psychometry/clairtangency — ask friends to bring you objects you don’t know the history of but they do.

  • Meditate — there are physical, mental and spiritual benefits to meditating. It makes you sleep better and feel more relaxed, and it actually enhances the specific areas of your brain that are responsible for emotional regulation and self-awareness, while reducing the size and connections of the area of the brain that is responsible for rumination (dwelling on things).

  • Visualise your third eye and beam white and purple light through it.

  • Make teas using herbs including mugwort, blue lotus, star anise, cinnamon - the latter two make a delicious blend together. NB do your own research with regards to existing issues, contra-indications or if pregnant/breastfeeding.

  • Breath work can support both the cleansing of the third eye, overall health, and meditation as well.

  • Use essential oils including lavender for intuition and relaxation, clary sage for 'clear sight', cedarwood for grounding, jasmine for dream work or rosemary for focus and spiritual awareness. NB not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. May also interfere with medications or existing conditions. Do your own research/use caution.

  • Be pure of thought - clear out your own stuff, do ‘the work’. Work through your emotional baggage, notice your judgements, your fears, your triggers and look to their root.

  • Practice mindfulness to be present in the moment.

  • Use sound the frequencies associated with the crown (963 hertz) and third eye (852 hertz) chakras are generally considered to be the best for increasing psychic abilities.

  • Chakra Work - Work on healing and opening your third eye and crown chakras (between and a couple of cm’s above the eyebrows and on top of the head)

  • Don’t be scared - the clairs are a natural part of us, as natural as sight or hearing so welcome your gifts as you do your other senses; with joy, love and gratitude.

  • Use prayer or a mantra to tell Spirit/Universe/Source/God that you are ready to receive and are grateful for any and all developments in the gifts of ‘clairs’. One of my favourite sayings is ask and you shall receive. Include having increased intuition or psychic gifts on your vision board if you use one. (And if you don’t use one, think about doing so.)

  • Minimise the drama in your life - assess your relationships, establish healthy boundaries, pick your battles. Learn to let some stuff go. Don’t get drawn into other people’s drama - focus on yourself.

  • Learn not to dismiss the thoughts, sounds, smells, feelings, physical sensations that seem to ‘come from nowhere’. Instead, follow the thought, focus on the sensation, whatever it may be. Say thank you, or who’s there, or ask out loud if there’s a message for you. “I’m ready to listen” or “I’m ready to hear you” - or whatever feels appropriate. Write them down too.

  • Practice self-care - keep your body healthy with exercise, whole foods, and plenty of water. Prioritise sleep. Some say that eating less meat and dairy can enhance psychic abilities.

  • Spend time in nature this elevates your vibration and helps you relax as well as improves generally wellbeing.

  • Use your gifts for good - the more you help others and the more positivity you bring to your own life the more your gifts will grow. It's not about being selfless but being selfish will not support your growth or keep your vibration high.

  • Work on decalcifying and activating your pineal gland - this is the biological counterpart of the third eye chakra.

  • Work with a mentor or mentors - choose them wisely. Trust your intuition, ensure they are not taking advantage of you/telling you their way is the only way and that they always treat you with respect and kindness.

  • Learn and practice grounding and shielding yourself so that you can switch off and keep your feet on the ground. This is important for your own wellbeing as well as strengthening all of your clairs senses.

If you are unsure what any of these mean or how to do them I can help you. In fact that is quite literally why I’m here it’s my soul’s purpose. You can book a relaxed chat with me here.

Games and Activities to Discover and Hone Your Clairs

Let your learning be playful!

These activities can help you explore your psychic senses in fun, supportive ways:

  • Gather a range of small (small enough to hold in your hand) differently coloured items that feel the same but are different colours — LEGO bricks, marbles, paperclips. Hold one in your hand without looking to see what colour it is and see if you can feel the colour.

  • Gather some photos (physical ones) - especially of people or places that mean a great deal to you - and see what you can pick up from the photo without looking at it. Muddle them up and pick one with your eyes closed or with them facing down.

  • If you have a tarot deck, have a go at doing a reading for yourself or someone else - without looking at the cards. Keep them face down and feel into them.

  • Make a game of clairtaction with someone you know who lives far away. Set aside a time when you will both attempt to touch each other remotely - take turns imagining/visualising touching them in a particular place and messaging each other, tuning in and intuitively guessing where the other person is ‘touching’ you.

  • Have a psychometry party! Invite your witchy or clair-curious pals over and ask them to bring an item that the others won’t know the history of. Take turns in making intuitive guesses about the history of the items - like an image of a previous owner or a place where it is or was kept.

  • Practice tasting and/or smelling things that aren’t in front of you. Visualise something like a freshly picked juicy mango - picture it, imagine its texture, smell and taste, feel the juice dripping as you bite it.

  • Practice sending ‘audio’ messages to your like-minded friends - try ‘sending’ a song and seeing if they can sense what song it is.

  • Alternatively, practice tuning into the radio before turning it on and seeing how often you are able to predict a song.

  • Keep a dream diary - you may be receiving clairvoyant or clairsentient messages in your dreams but not registering the fact. Also, if you dream about someone - tell them, have a conversation about it.

  • If someone pops into your head for ‘no reason’, send them a message saying so and ask if there’s a reason why they might have come to mind. Were they feeling a strong emotion? You can simply say, “I was just thinking of you - are you ok?”

  • If you or someone close to you has a pain somewhere, place your hands just a centimetre or two above the skin or clothing where they are hurting. Notice if you can feel heat coming from them. If you feel you want to, and you are both comfortable with it, imagine you are pulling the heat or pain from them with your hands - then shake your hands to release it.

  • Get confident at asking people (depending on how well you know them, you might do this in different ways) if you have picked up on what they are feeling correctly.

  • Practice recording meditations and affirmations for yourself and listening to them. Make notes about how you were feeling, what you had been doing just before you recorded them - and notes on how effective they were at getting you into a meditative state or positive frame of mind. See what correlations there are between your emotions, actions and their effectiveness.

  • Practice clairaudience by finding a truly quiet place to be and sitting in absolute silence (this is harder to do than you might think). If you have noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs, this helps - or if you are able to visit a sensory deprivation tank/flotation tank, even better. This might well activate other clairs as well.

  • Visit ancient sites and places that are renowned for being haunted. Keep your mind open. Consider asking for any spirits present to make you aware of them. Remind them you mean no harm. Consider making or leaving an offering if it is possible and appropriate.

Thank you for taking the time to explore this magical territory with me. The clairs are not just tools - they are expressions of our soul’s sensitivity and our true identities. The more we honour them, trust them and use them, the more they open up to us.

Wishing you deep connection, quiet wisdom, and radiant joy as you develop your gifts.
